Biografia

È stato coordinatore dei progetti di cooperazione scientifica fra i paesi dell'Unione Europea e dell'ex Unione Sovietica, finanziati dall'Agenzia Europea INTAS denominati “Nonlinear evolution equations and dynamical systems” (INTAS-93-166 and INTAS-93-166 Ext. and INTAS-99-01782).

Principale organizzatore (con F. Pempinelli) di una serie di Workshop internazionali dapprima su "Nonlinear Evolution equations and Dynamical Systems" e poi su "Nonlinear Physics. Theory and Experiment" a Lecce e Gallipoli.

Risultati scientifici piu` importanti tra quelli che sono oggetto di 120 pubblicazioni a stampa, tutte in inglese, la maggior parte su riviste a diffusione internazionale con referee:
1) Formulazione del metodo della trasformata di gauge di Backlund e sua estensione a 2+1 dimensioni;
2) Formulazione del metodo di Lax "debole" con conseguente scoperta di nuove equazioni solitoniche bidimensionali anche di interesse fisico;
3) Scoperta dei solitoni multimensionali localizzati (dromioni) per le equazioni di Davey-Stewartson I e III;

4) Integrabilita` sulla linea e sulla semilinea di equazioni collegate con lo Stimulated Raman Scattering (problema spettrale di Ablowitz-Ladik con relazioni di dispersione non analitiche);
5)Risoluzione di un nuovo modello risonante a 2 onde e scoperta di un solitone topologico;
6) Formulazione del metodo del risolvente esteso e studio delle equazioni di Kadomtsev-Petviashvili nel caso di soluzioni che vanno a costante all'infinito secondo certe direzioni del piano.

Biography

Born in Trieste, September 13, 1941. Co-founder of the Physics Institute at the new born State University of Lecce in 1968.

Full Professor of Mathematical Methods of Physics at the University of Lecce. Director of the Department of Physics at the same University from 1987 up to 1991.

Main organizer (with F. Pempinelli) of an international Workshop series on "Nonlinear Evolution Equations and Dynamical Systems" and afterwards on "Nonlinear Physics. Theory and Experiment", held in Lecce and Gallipoli.

President of the Consortium Einstein, founded by the University of Lecce, University of Roma "La Sapienza" and University of Montpellier with the aim of developing researchers and international scientific cooperation in Nonlinear Science. Coordinator of projects of scientific cooperations among Institutions from European Union and countries of the former Soviet Union, founded by the European Agency INTAS, projects named "Nonlinear Evolution Equations and Dynamical Systems (INTAS-93-166, INTAS-93-166 Ext. and INTAS-99-01782).

Scientific results have been communicated in 120 articles, all in english and mostly published in international Journals with referee.
Most relevant among them:
1) Formulation of the gauge Backlund transform method and its extension to 2+1 dimensions;
2) Formulation of the "weak" Lax method and related discovery of new bidimensional soliton equations, some of them interesting for physical applications;
3) Discovery of the localized multidimensional solitons (dromions) for the Davey-Stewartson I and III equations;
4) Integrability on the line and semiline for a system related to Stimulated Raman Scattering (Ablowitz-Ladik spectral problem with nonanalytic dispersion relations);
5)Solution of a new resonant model and discovery of a topological soliton;
6) Formulation of the extended resolvent method and its use as a tool for studying the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations when their solutions go to a constant at large distances along some directions in the plane.
